Using the Agilent Recovery System

Last Updated: August 29, 2007

The Agilent Recovery System can be used to repair errors on the test set's hard disk drive, or to restore the original factory configuration of the system software on the hard disk drive.  The Agilent Recovery System is stored in a separate hard disk drive partition.

Repairing errors on the hard disk drive may result in loss of data or files. If you require more information, see the “chkdsk” documentation in the Windows XP Help and Support Center.

Restoring the original factory system software does not restore any of the following items:

It is recommended that you use a regular back up strategy. Your IT department may already have a back up strategy in place which is suitable for the test set and its data. If you require further information on this topic, see Follow a Back Up Strategy.  Using the Agilent Recovery System in conjunction with a regular back up strategy should allow you to fully recover the test set's data.

There are two methods for accessing the Agilent Recovery System on the test set. If the operating system selection menu is not displayed during the startup sequence, try using the alternative method.

This topic provides a procedure for using each of these two methods:

To Access the Agilent Recovery System Using the Standard Method

  1. Ensure that the test set is turned off. (The test set must be turned off initially because you can only access the Agilent recovery System during the test set's startup sequence.)

  2. Turn on the test set.

  3. After the “Agilent Technologies” logo appears, the following operating system selection menu should be displayed for 3 seconds. (If you do not see the operating system selection menu, you should be able to access the Agilent Recovery System using the alternative method.

  1. Use the DOWN ARROW key to move the highlight to Agilent Recovery System, and then press Enter.

  2. When the Agilent Recovery System has started, follow the on-screen instructions to perform the recovery operations you want.
Please note that the test set's MouseKeys feature must be turned Off to use the numeric keypad to enter data. To do this, press the MouseKeys key on the test set's front panel until the green indicator light is not illuminated.

  3. After exiting the Agilent Recovery System, the test set restarts. If you have selected to restore the factory system software, the test set runs the Windows XP Setup Wizard.

  4. Additional recovery steps may be required to fully recover the system to its previous working state.  This may involve restoring your own backups of the test set information, re-installing applications and data, or performing system customizations.

To Access the Agilent Recovery System Using the Alternative Method

For some types of test set system failures, the normal way to access the Agilent Recovery System may be unavailable.  If you restart the test set and do not see the operating system selection menu (shown in the graphic above), you can access the Agilent Recovery System using this alternative method.

  1. Ensure that the test set is turned off. (The test set must be turned off initially because you can only access the Agilent recovery System during the test set's startup sequence.)

  2. Turn on the test set.

  3. When the Agilent Technologies logo appears, hold down the Control (CTRL) key.

  1. When the Smart Boot Manager screen appears release the Control (CTRL) key.

  2. In the Boot Menu, use the DOWN ARROW key to move the highlight to "Recovery System", then press Enter.

  2. After exiting the Agilent Recovery System, the test set restarts. If you have selected to restore the factory system software, the test set runs the Windows XP Setup Wizard.

  3. Additional recovery steps may be required to fully recover the system to its previous working state.  This may involve restoring your own backups of the test set information, re-installing applications and data, or performing system customizations.
