Enabling Downlink MIMO Operation

Introduction

E6651A Test Sets with option configurations 3M1, 6M1, 3M2, and 6M2 are capable of MIMO operation. To enable MIMO for tests, for example DL Ping Test, select the following settings on the BS Emulator menu:

  1. Press Mode, BS Emulator, Settings, BSE Setting, More, More and press DL 2nd Zone Switch  to select [PUSC].

  2. Press More, More and MIMO Matrix Type to select [STC] or SM. (Space Time Coding or Spatial Multiplexing)

The MIMO Matrix Type can only be set when the DL 2nd Zone Switch is set to PUSC (Partial Usage Sub Carrier).

  1. Press MIMO TLV to select DL, UL or [DL+UL] as required.

Following Network Entry procedure, tests such as DL Ping can be performed on MIMO capable SS devices.

The MIMO capable version of the E6651A Test Sets use RF1 as the main signalling port and RF2 as the additional MIMO port. Network entry can only be achieved if the SS (DUT) transmitter is connected to RF1.

Ensure Modulation and RF transmission are enabled on both RF I/O Ports.

Antenna Coupling

The coupling factor defines how much of the ideal RF1 transmission is included in the output from the RF2 port (and also how much of RF2's transmission is included on RF1's port).

Press Mode, BS Emulator, Settings, BSE Setting, Antenna Coupling to enable the Antenna Coupling function and use the knob or arrow keys to configure the coupling value required between Antenna A and B. This function is not available on single RF port Test Sets. MIMO operation must also be enabled (MIMO_Matrix_Type).
