3.3.1 Receiver Sensitivity and Dynamic Range

Last updated: January 15, 2009

Definition

Receiver Sensitivity: This test evaluates how well the access terminal (AT) demodulates a very low level Forward Traffic Channel signal. This simulates the AT in very poor propagation conditions, typically far from an access network sector or cell, where it would request a low data rate.

Dynamic Range: This test evaluates how well the access terminal (AT) demodulates a very high level Forward Traffic Channel signal (tests whether it gets overloaded). This simulates the AT in very good propagation conditions, typically very near an access network, where it would request a high data rate.

The figure of merit for each test is Packet Error Rate (PER).

Method of Measurement

  1. Connect the access network emulator to the AT.
  2. If the AT supports only Subtype 0 or Subtype 2 Physical Layer Subtype, perform 3 - 6. If the AT supports Subtype 3 Physical Layer Subtype, perform 7 -10
  3. Set up a Test Application session and open an FTAP (for Subtype 0 or 1 Physical Layer) or FETAP (for Subtype 2 Physical Layer) connection.
  4. Receiver Sensitivity (test 1): Set the Forward Traffic Channel rate to 307.2 kbps (2 slot) and Î or to -105.5 dBm/1.23 MHz.
  5. Dynamic Range (tests 2-3): Set the Î or to -25 dBm/1.23 MHz and the Forward Traffic Channel rate to 307.2 kbps (2 slot) for test 2 and 2,457.6 kbps (1 slot) for test 3.
  6. Calculate PER for each test.
  7. Set up a Test Application session and open an FMCAP (for Subtype 3 Physical Layer) connection.
  8. Receiver Sensitivity (test 4): Two Forward Traffic channels are required and with maximum allowable frequency separation (Max Forward Link Band with No Jammer reported by AT). Set the Forward Traffic Channel rate (on a per carrier basis) to 307.2 kbps (2 slot) and Î or (received power per carrier) to -105.5 dBm/1.23 MHz.
  9. Dynamic Range (tests 5): Maximum number of Forward Traffic channels that can be demodulated by the AT (Max Number of Forward Link Supported reported by AT) are required. Set the Î or (received power per carrier) to -25 dBm/1.23 MHz and the Forward Traffic Channel rate (on a per carrier basis) to 307.2 kbps.
  10. Calculate PER for each test. The PER is measured on a per carrier basis.

Minimum Standard

PER shall be less than or equal to 0.5% with 95% confidence.
