4.2.2 Waveform Quality and Frequency Accuracy

Last updated: July 22, 2008

Definition

Waveform quality is the basic measure of the performance of a CDMA transmitter. The figure of merit for waveform quality is rho. Rho, also called the power correlation coefficient, is the percentage of transmitted power that correlates to the ideal code. Rho provides a measure of how well the signal's power distribution matches the ideal power distribution. A value of 1.00 indicates that all of the transmitted power correlates with the ideal transmission code.

Several measurement results are returned when a rho measurement is performed, including frequency error and transmit time error. Frequency error is a measure of how accurately the access terminal is transmitting at its assigned frequency. Transmit time error indicates how accurately the AT has aligned its timing to the access network's pilot in static conditions.

This test measures rho, and also encompasses the 4.1.2 Frequency Accuracy and 4.2.1 Time Reference (static only) tests.

Method of Measurement

  1. Connect the access network emulator to the AT.
  2. Test 1: Set up a Test Application session. For Subtype 0 or 1 Physical Layer, open an RTAP connection and configure the Reverse Data Channel rate to 9.6 kbps. For Subtype 2 Physical Layer, open an RETAP connection and configure the Reverse Data Channel payload size to 256 bits with Termination Target of 16 slots.
  3. Configure the Test Application FTAP (for Subtype 0 or 1 Physical Layer) or FETAP (for Subtype 2 Physical Layer) so that the ACK Channel is transmitted at all the slots. (It is necessary for the access terminal to transmit the R-ACK Channel to determine modulation quality of its complete signal.) In order for the R-ACK Channel to be active in all slots, you must set ACK Channel Bit Fixed Mode Attribute to on.
  4. Set Î or to -75 dBm/1.23 MHz.
  5. Measure rho, frequency error and transmit time error.
  6. Test 2: For Subtype 3 Physical Layer, if the access terminal supports multi-carrier operation, perform the following steps (two carriers are required).
  7. Configure the AT to transmit on two carriers at the closest possible frequency separation between them.
  8. Set up a Test Application session for Subtype 3 Physical Layer. Configure the Test Application RMCTAP and configure the Reverse Data Channel payload size to 256 bits with Termination Target of 16 slots. Configure the Test Application FMCTAP (for Subtype 3 Physical Layer) so that the ACK Channel is transmitted at all the slots.
  9. Repeat 4-5.

Minimum Standard

Rho shall be >0.944 for test 1 and >0.933 for each carrier for test 2.

Frequency error shall be within +/- 300 Hz for band classes 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 10, 11, 12 and within +/- 150 Hz for band classes 1, 4, 6 and 8.

Static transmit time error shall be within +/- 1 ms.
