Concurrent Measurements

Description

A number of measurements can be initiated (with the INITiate command) while other measurements are being made, and the test set will perform as many operations simultaneously as its architecture allows. This technique is referred to as concurrency. Performing measurements concurrently can greatly improve test throughput.

Operating Considerations

The test set has three parallel signal paths to improve measurement throughput.

  • Demodulation downconverter path.
  • Measurement downconverter path.
  • Power detector path.

Since measurements are DSP (digital signal processor) based, and there are four A/D converters available to digitize or "sample" the input signal for analysis by the DSP, the test set will always have the capability to perform one transmitter measurement, one receiver measurement, and maintain the radio link concurrently. The test set's ability to perform multiple transmitter, or multiple receiver tests concurrently will depend on the availability of resources within the test set and availability of the signal to be tested.

Transmitter Measurements
Access Probe Power Not concurrent with any measurements except Digital Average Power. When Access Probe Power is awaiting a probe, all other measurements except Digital Average Power hang.
Channel Power Concurrent with Packet Error Rate (however, access terminals do not allow concurrent transmitter and receiver measurements, see 1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration ), Tx Spurious Emissions, Digital Average Power and Waveform Quality + Code Domain Power.
Digital Average Power Concurrent with Packet Error Rate (however, access terminals do not allow concurrent transmitter and receiver measurements, see 1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration ), and all other transmitter measurements except TROLPC.
Fast Device Tune Not concurrent with any measurements. When Fast Device Tune is initiated, the test set turns all other measurements off.
Graphic Access Probe Power ( Lab Application Only ) Not concurrent with any measurements except Digital Average Power. When Graphic Access Probe Power is awaiting a probe, all other measurements except Digital Average Power hang.
Time Response of Open Loop Power Control (TROLPC) Not concurrent with any measurements. When TROLPC is initiated, the test set turns all other measurements off.
TX Dynamic Power Not concurrent with any measurements. When TX Dynamic Power is initiated, the test set turns all other measurements off.
Tx Spurious Emissions Concurrent with Packet Error Rate (however, access terminals do not allow concurrent transmitter and receiver measurements, see 1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration ), Channel Power, Digital Average Power and Waveform Quality + Code Domain Power.
Waveform Quality + Code Domain Concurrent with Packet Error Rate (however, access terminals do not allow concurrent transmitter and receiver measurements, see 1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration ), Tx Spurious Emissions, Channel Power, and Digital Average Power.
Receiver Measurements
Packet Error Rate Concurrent with Tx Spurious Emissions, Channel Power, Digital Average Power and Waveform Quality + Code Domain Power (however, access terminals do not allow concurrent transmitter and receiver measurements, see 1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration ).

Concurrent Testing

In order to be able to perform tests concurrently, the measurements required to perform the test must be concurrent. However, that is not the only requirement to allow concurrent testing - the test conditions required for the tests must also be identical. For example, the test conditions for 4.3.4 Maximum RF Output Power and 4.4.1 Conducted Spurious Emissions are identical, and the measurements required for these tests are concurrent. Thus, these tests can be performed concurrently (see Step 5: INITiate and FETCh Measurements )

1xEV-DO Concurrent Testing Consideration

To perform receiver tests on a 1xEV-DO access terminal, the access terminal must send FTAP or FETAP Loop Back Packets on the Reverse Traffic Channel to indicate whether the test set's FTAP or FETAP Test Packets were successfully received. To perform transmitter tests on a 1xEV-DO access terminal, the access terminal must send RTAP or RETAP Test Packets on the Reverse Traffic Channel. (See C.S0029 Test Application Specification Description (TAP/ETAP) for more details).

Currently, access terminals are not able to send both FTAP or FETAP Loop Back Packets and RTAP or RETAP Test Packets simultaneously. Therefore, although many of the test set's receiver and transmitter measurements are concurrent, 1xEV-DO transmitter and receiver tests can not be performed concurrently.
