How Do I Make a Packet Data Connection?

This section is only applicable to the lab application.
The packet data connection can only be initiated from the wireless device (such as an 1xEV-DO access terminal). This example procedure only shows the key setups to access a web server on a PC from an AT's built-in web browser via the test set emulating an access network.

Hardware Connection Setup (see
Access Network Emulation
):

Connect the test set's rear panel LAN PORT to a LAN or a PC running a server application. If the test set has the LAN 2 PORT, connect it to a LAN too.

Connect a web browser enabled wireless device to the test set's front panel RF IN/OUT connector.

Set up the test set such as Cell Power, Cell Band, Channel, etc. required for your wireless devices to open a session with the test set. See

Data Channel Info

to a proper value for your AT and set the
External PDSN State

indicating the test set's internal PDSN is used (see

).

Turn your AT on and wait for it to open a session with the test set. See
B. Open a Session
.

After the session is open (the Active Cell status area should show
Session Open
), navigate to the web browser on your AT (depending upon your AT's design) and attempt to access the PC's web server.

The Active Cell status area should show
Connected
(see

) indicating a successful packet data connection. Observe the AT's display, the web page you were accessing should be shown on your AT's screen.

As data is transferred, you can use the data counters (see
How Do I Access the Data Counters?
) and the Data Throughout Monitor (
How Do I Use the Data Throughput Monitor?
), etc., to monitor the data rate variations. Add an AWGN power (
How Do I Change Generator Information?
) or change the Cell power, observe the effects of the RF degradation on the data rate.
