Packet Data Service Configurations

Packet Data Service Configurations

Last updated: September 13, 2010

This section is only applicable to the lab application.

The test set supports Service Option 33 (SO33) for high speed packet data transfer between a wireless device and a packet switched network so that you can test the performance of data applications such as music downloads, interactive and multimedia applications.

Packet Data Service Options

The test set provides two packet data service options: SO33 and SO33 (+ F-SCH) which are available with the radio configurations 3 and above (see Service Option ). The forward and reverse traffic channels associated with the selected service options that are supported by the test set are different from the standard definition (see Channel Configurations for Packet Data Service Options ).

NOTE
In the real network, forward and reverse supplemental channels can be added to the fundamental (traffic) channel to increase bandwidth. The supplemental channel is requested by the mobile station when high speed operation is needed. The base station controls the duration of time that the supplemental channel is granted.

a. The test set does not support SO33 (+ F-SCH) service option in radio configuration (Fwd5, Rvs4).

Considerations When Changing Service Options

Service Option can't be changed during a packet data connection between SO33(+F-SCH)/SO33 and any other service options, the test set does not make service negotiation, but rejects the service option change directly.

Packet Data Service Data Rates

The actual data rate for the packet data transfer depends on the radio configuration and the forward/reverse channels established (see Channel Configurations for Packet Data Service Options ):

  • The F-FCH data rate is fixed to Full either at 9.6 kbps or 14.4 kbps. See F-FCH and F-SCH Data Rates .
  • The F-SCH data rate can be changed by the F-SCH Data Rate parameter while maintaining an SO33 (with F-SCH channel being assigned) or SO33 (+F-SCH) data connection. See F-SCH Data Rate for details.
  • The R-SCH data rate can be changed by the R-SCH Data Rate parameter while maintaining an SO33 (with R-SCH channel being assigned) data connection. See R-SCH Data Rate for details.

You can't set the data rate to 230.4kbps when R-SCH Encoder Type (see "CALL:SCHannel:REVerse:ENCoder" ) is turbo and Radio Configuration is (Fwd5, Rvs4).

Considerations When Changing F-SCH/R-SCH Data Rates

  • F-SCH/R-SCH Data Rates can be changed while maintaining a data connection. The test set will inform the mobile station of the new data rate with signaling, and wait for a reply from the mobile station. When the mobile station acknowledges the new rate, the test set will change the over-the-air data rate. If the mobile station does not acknowledge the new data rate, the test set will, instead, display an error indicating that the mobile station rejected a data rate change and the data rate will not be changed.

Handoffs Available for Packet Data Services

  • The test set supports hard handoffs, such as a change of RF channel or a change of PN Offset, during an SO33 or SO33 (+ F-SCH) data connection. See Performing a Hard Handoff .
  • The test set does not support soft handoffs during SO33 or SO33 (+ F-SCH) data connection.
