R-FCH Gating

R-FCH Gating

Last updated: November 19, 2010

This section is only applicable to the lab application.

The cdma2000 system (as specified in IS-2000 standards) supports R-FCH gating in 1/8 data rate for radio configurations greater than 2, which can be enabled via the REV_FCH_GATING_MODE field of Extended Channel Assignment message sent to the mobile stations (MS). The MS in gated transmission is more effective to optimize the battery life than just lowering the transmission power.

The test set's support for the R-FCH gating mode is disabled (off) by default. It is available for the IS-2000 system with radio configurations (Fwd3, Rvs3) and above (see Radio Configuration ). If the test set's R-FCH gating mode is enabled (on) and the MS supports the gating mode, the MS will gate the R-FCH/R-Pilot Channel when transmitting at 1/8th rate (see R-FCH Gating ). If the R-FCH gating mode is enabled (on) and the MS reports that it does not support the R-FCH gating mode in either the Origination message or the Page Response message, the attempted call will be terminated and an error message will be posted by the test set.

The setting of the R-FCH gating mode is sent to the MS via the REV_FCH_GATING_MODE field of Extended Channel Assignment message during a call establishment (see Establishing an Active Link with the Mobile Station ). It can be changed only when the call status is IDLE.

By working together with Random (40% voice activity) traffic data rate (see Traffic Data Rate ), the test set's support for the R-FCH gating mode allows you to test the talk time (battery life) of the MS (see How Do I Use R-FCH Gating for Talk Time Testing? for example procedure).

R-FCH Gating

System Type = IS-2000 1

Radio Config = (Fwd3, Rvs3) or above 1

R-FCH gating mode =On

Service Option 1

Traffic Data Rate 2

Expected R-FCH gating

Loopback (SO2, 9 or 55)

Eighth

Always gated.

Full, Half, or Quarter

Never gated.

Random (40% Voice Activity)

Sometimes gated (R-FCH is gated during the periods when data is sent 60% of the time at 1/8th rate).

Service options other than loopback

Not applicable.

Sometimes gated (test set does not control the rate on the reverse link and therefore can not guarantee if the R-FCH/R-PICH will be gated).

1. For IS-95 system or IS-2000 system with radio configurations less than (Fwd3, Rvs3), the mobile station will be gated regardless of the R-FCH gating mode whenever the data rate is less than full rate (see Impact of the Test Set Configurations on R-FCH Gating Transmission for details)
