This section is applicable to the lab application and to a test application with the required feature license.
SMS Network Model
The test set provides the SMS capabilities with the relevant behaviors of the following network entities.
-
BS (base station): represents the CDMA system infrastructure. It contains base station transceiver, the mobile switching center (MSC) required for network connection.
-
MC (message center): represents a generic SMS message center function which provides end-to-end connectivity between the mobile station (MS) and the SMS system.
-
TE (terminal equipment): represents a voice or data equipment connected either directly or indirectly to the message center. The test set emulates parts of its behavior.
-
PSTN (public switched telephone network)
SMS Protocol Description
SMS Protocol Stacks
shows a simplified SMS protocol stack for the CDMA network carrying SMS. The procedures and messages used for exchanging short messages between the network and the mobile stations are defined in the 3GPP2 C.S0015 standard.
The CDMA system employs the Data Burst Message (with BURST_TYPE set to 0x00011) to carry the SMS messages between the mobile station and the base station.
For Mobile-Terminated SMS messages sent from the test set to the mobile station:
-
The test set's SMS teleservice layer is responsible for forming the teleservice messages by putting the user entered message (see
Creating/Editing the Mobile-Terminated Message Contents
) to the CHARi field of the User Data subparameter and some user-settable parameters (see
Setting Mobile-Terminated SMS Parameters
) to the appropriate fields of teleservice messages. Teleservice message fields are not the only fields that receive user-settable values. Some user settings are applied to transport layer parameters.
-
The SMS transport layer then includes the teleservice message contents in the Bearer Data parameter of transport layer messages.
-
The SMS relay layer is responsible for forming the Data Burst Message to be sent to the mobile station on the control channel (F-PCH or F-BCCH/F-CCCH) or the traffic channel (F-Traffic/F-FCH) via Link Layer, with BURST_TYPE field set to `000011', with MSG_NUMBER field set to 1, with NUM_MSGS field set to 1, with the NUM_FIELDS field set to the number of characters in the SMS transport layer message and with CHARi carrying the SMS transport layer messages.
For Mobile-Originated SMS messages sent from the mobile station to the test set, the test set's SMS relay layer is responsible for processing the Data Burst Messages (with the BURST_TYPE field set to `000011') received on the reverse access channel or traffic channel, then passed to the transport layer for further processing. The received SMS message contents and the related information are displayed in the Mobile-Originated Message window and the Mobile-Originated SMS Info window on the
Short Message Service Information
screen.
Test Set SMS Capabilities
To test the capabilities of mobile stations providing the SMS service and verify the correct operation of the mobile stations, you can control the test set to format, transmit and receive the SMS messages to and from the mobile stations. The test set supports:
The test set does not guarantee the functionality of the simultaneous Mobile-Terminated and Mobile-Originated SMS operations which may result in both messages not being properly handled (with non-typical SMS Status transitions) or may result in one message being processed as normal and the other message not being properly handled.
