This section is only applicable to the lab application.

General Procedure for FPC Operation (FPC_Mode 000)

Step 1: Access FPC Info menus

  1. Press the Call Setup key.
  2. Press the left-side of More key until the Call Control 4 of 4 menu is displayed.
  3. Select the Forward Power Control ( F2 ). The FPC Info menu is displayed and all of the parameters and operations relating to forward power control can be accessed.

Step 2: Set up FPC Mode

  1. On FPC Info 1 of 2 , press the F3 ( FPC Mode ).
  2. Set the FPC Mode to 000-Primary 800 .

Step 3: Set up FPC Parameters

  1. On FPC Info 1 of 2 , press the F1 ( FPC Parameters ).
  2. Set the following parameters as desired. For example,
    • Set the Maximum F-FCH Level to -3 dB .
    • Set the F-FCH Target FER to 1.0% .
    • Set the F-FCH Initial Setpoint to 8 dB .
    • Set the F-FCH Minimum Setpoint to 2 dB .
    • Set the F-FCH Maximum Setpoint to 16 dB .
    • Set the F-FCH Step Size to 0.5 dB .
  3. Press the F6 ( Close Menu ).

NOTE
Some of these parameters (such as target FER, minimum/maximum setpoint, etc. see FPC Parameters for details) can also be changed after a call has been established (after step 5).

Step 4: Set up code channel levels

  1. If required, follow the procedure of How Do I Change Generator Information? and set the F-Pilot Level, F-FCH Level to the desired.

Step 5: Establish a call

  1. Establish a call in radio configuration (Fwd3, Rvs3) or above with loopback service option (such as SO2, 9, or 55). See How Do I Set Up a Call? for detailed procedure.

Step 6: Set up cell power, multi-path fading and external AWGN

To generate faded forward channel signals with AWGN, the test set requires a rear panel digital bus connecting to an external PC running Baseband Studio software. For detailed setup and operating instructions pertaining to faded signal generation, refer to Digital Bus Information .

Step 7: Request the Outer Loop Report from MS

  1. On FPC Info 1 of 2 , press the F4 ( Request Outer Loop Report ).
  2. Observe the MS reported F-FCH current setpoint (Eb/Nt) value on the Inner/Outer Loop Power Control Information window.

Step 8: Set up MS Reported FER

  1. On FPC Info 1 of 2 , press the F2 ( MS Reported FER Parms ).
  2. To make a periodic-based FER reporting from MS, set the following parameters:

    • Set the Frame Interval of Report (Frames) to the desired value (for example, 640 )
    • Set Periodic Report Enable to On .

To make a threshold-based FER reporting from MS, set the following parameters:

    • Set the Bad Frame Threshold (Frames) to the desired value (for example, 3)
    • Set the Threshold Report Enable to On .

  3. Press the F6 ( Close Menu ).
  4. Observe the MS Reported Frame Error Rate Information window. You will see the value of the MS Reported FER will be updated either periodically or when the detected bad frames exceeds the specified threshold.

Step 9: Initiate Frame Error Rate measurement

To make a more accurate evaluation on the performance of the MS FPC, perform the Frame Error Rate measurement. Follow the general procedure of Measuring Frame Error Rate (FER) and set the parameters as required for your test.

Step 10: Repeat steps 6 - 9

  1. Repeat steps 6 -8, change the cell power, external AWGN power and channel simulator configuration and then observe the measurement results.

Step 11: (Optional) Clear the MS reported results

  1. To clear the MS reported outer loop report results shown on the Inner/Outer Loop Power Control Information window:

    • On FPC Info 2 of 2, press the F2 ( Clear Outer Loop Report ).

To clear the MS reported FER results shown on the MS Reported Frame Error Rate Information window:

    • On FPC Info 2 of 2, press the F3 ( Clear MS Reported FER ).

Testing 3.4.7 Demodulation of Forward Traffic Channel in Multipath Fading Channel with Closed Loop Power Control (FPC_MODE = '000')

This test requires faded signals with AWGN, which the test set must be equipped with a rear panel digital bus connecting to an external PC running Baseband Studio software. See Digital Bus Information for details.

This test examines the performance of forward power control by measuring the differences between the mobile station's received FER and the assigned target FER while not exceeding the specified Traffic Eb/Nt limits. This test will be performed on F-FCH (20 ms frame). The test set does not support tests on F-DCCH.

To perform the tests as specified in the standard, follow the procedures as describe in the General Procedure for FPC Operation (FPC_Mode 000) and change some settings per standard requirements. An example settings required for test 4 of 3.4.7 test is given in Settings required to change for test 4 of 3.4.7

Settings required to change for test 4 of 3.4.7

Settings Specified in the Standard

Equivalent Settings on the Test Set

Parameters

Values

Step 2: Set up FPC Mode

FPC_MODE 000 Set FPC Mode to 000-Primary 800 .

Step 3: Set up FPC Parameters

Maximum F-FCH Ec/Ior (dB) -3 Set the Maximum F-FCH Level to -3.00 dB .

Set the FPC F-FCH Maximum Setpoint to 10.3 dB .

Note that setting the initial/minimum/maximum setpoints to the same value will effectively disable the outer loop power control. This also indicates the current outer loop Eb/Nt setpoint will be fixed to the 10.3 dB.

FPC_FCH_MIN_SETPT

On the external channel simulator,

  • Set the multi-path fading simulation as specified in standard channel simulator configuration 3.
  • Set the external AWGN to -59 dBm/1.23 MHz.

For detailed setup and operating instructions pertaining to faded signal generation, see Digital Bus Information .

  • Set the Minimum Frame Count to 350 frames (change the setting as required for your test).

Testing 3.4.9 Demodulation of Forward Traffic Channel in Multipath Fading Channel with Outer Loop Power Control and Closed Loop Power Control (FPC_MODE = `000')

This test requires faded signals with AWGN, which the test set must be equipped with a rear panel digital bus connecting to an external PC running Baseband Studio software. See Digital Bus Information for details.

This test examines the performance of slow power control (outer loop power control) by checking the average Traffic Eb/Nt at the test set under a given frame error constraint and channel simulator configuration. This test will be performed on F-FCH (20 ms frame) in FPC mode 000. The test set does not support tests on F-DCCH

Step 6: Set up cell power, multi-path fading and external AWGN

On the test set,

  • Set the Cell 1 Power to -55 dBm/1.23 MHz. Note that Î or /Ioc is the ratio of Cell Power to AWGN equal to 8 dB. Since the Ioc is the value of AWGN equal to -63 dBm/1.23 MHz) so the Cell Power is the value of (Ioc + Ior/Ioc) equal to -55 dBm/1.23 MHz.

On the external channel simulator,
