Setting Authentication Parameters

This section is only applicable to the lab application and to a test application with the required feature license.

All of the parameters used during authentication operations can be configured from the Authen Ctrl menu. To access the Authen Ctrl menu, press the Authentication ( F2 ) on the Call Control 3 of 3 (in the Test Application) or Call Control 3 of 5 (in the Lab Application).

• A-Key (Dec)

  It is used to enter the MS's A-Key value into the test set. A-Key is a secret, 64-bit pattern stored in the mobile station (MS). It is used to generate/update the MS's Shared Secret Data (SSD).

  The A-Key value is entered as a 20 decimal digits. When you enter a value into the A_key field, the test set initializes its internal SSD_A to all zeroes (SSD_A=0 indicates True) and generates a 6 decimal check digits, which are displayed on the Authentication Parameters window.

  The Global Challenge Operation and Unique Challenge Operation require the SSD_A value in the test set and the MS to be identical, which can be performed in either of the following ways:

  • Initialize SSD_A in both the test set and MS to zeroes by changing their A-Keys. It is recommended that you set the A-Keys in the test set and MS to the same values. However, any valid A-Keys (even different) will work since entering an A-Key will set the SSD_A to zero.
  • If you can not change MS's A-Key, but you know what it is, enter the exact A-Key on the test set, then perform SSD Update Operation to synchronize the SSD_A values between the test set and MS. If you even do not know the MS's A-Key, try the zero value, since A-Key in many mobile stations is initially programmed to zero until re-programmed by the service provider. You must set this field to the value of the A-key that is stored in the MS. Otherwise, the SSD Update Operation will fail.

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:SUPDate:AKEY

• Global Challenge Random (RAND) (Hex)

  Sets the 32-bit random challenge data (entered as an 8-digit hexadecimal value) used to calculate the AUTHR during Global Challenge Operation .

  • When the Global Challenge is set to On, this value is sent to the MS in the Access Parameters Message or the ANSI-41 RAND Message .
  • When the Global Challenge is set to Off, this value is stored in the test set. It will not sent to the MS until the Global Challenge is set to On.
     

  NOTE

  The RAND value, whenever set, is immediately applied in the test set. It is possible that the test set and MS use the different RANDs in a Global Challenge, since the MS may send its stored RANDC to the test set before the test set sends an Access Parameter Message or ANSI-41 RAND Message with the changed RAND value to the MS. In this case, the Global Challenge may fail.

• Unique Challenge Random (RANDU) (Hex)

  Sets the 24-bit random challenge data (entered as a 6-digit hexadecimal value) used to calculate the AUTHU during Unique Challenge Operation . It is sent to the MS in the Authentication Challenge Message when you start the Unique Challenge operation (see Unique Challenge ).

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:UCHallenge:RANDom

• SSD Update Random (RANDSSD) (Hex)

  Sets the 56-bit random challenge data (entered as a 14-digit hexadecimal value) used to calculate the AUTHBS during SSD Update Operation . It is sent to the MS in the SSD Update Message when you start the SSD operation (see SSD Update ).

• Timer Based Registration State

  Enable or disable the timer based registrations. See Performing a Registration for details.

  When the Global Challenge is turned on, the Global Challenge Operation is repeated for every new registration.

• Check Digits Algorithm

  When Cell Operating Mode is Active Cell and System Type is IS-2000, Check Digits Algorithm is used to set the algorithm to generate check digits.

  • When Check Digits Algorithm is set to Normal, Check Digits (Dec) is calculated using the A-Key (Dec) and ESN .
  • When Check Digits Algorithm is set to Alternate, if MEID Support is ON, MEID Support Indicator (Information reported by MS, see Mobile Reported Information ) is Yes, and the Cell Band is not Korean PCS, Check Digits (Dec) is calculated using the A-Key (Dec) and MEID. See MEID / Enhanced PLCM .
  • If the Cell Band is Korean PCS: Check Digits (Dec) is calculated according to A-Key (Dec).
  • If MEID Support is Off, the Check Digits Algorithm parameter is grayed out and the default setting "Normal" is used.

• Global Challenge

  When it is set to On, the test set signals the MS to go into authentication mode when the registrations, call originations, pages or data bursts are performed. See Global Challenge Operation for details.

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:GCHallenge:ENABle

• Unique Challenge

  Starts the Unique Challenge Operation .

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:UCHallenge:STARt

• SSD Update

  Starts the SSD Update Operation .

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:SUPDate:STARt

• Clear Authen Results

  Clears the authentication results displayed on the Global Challenge Information , Unique Challenge Information and SSD Update Information windows.

  GPIB Command: CALL:SECurity:AUTHenticate:CLEar[:ALL]
