MEID / Enhanced PLCM

Last updated: July 24, 2008

Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) is a newly designed way to uniquely identify the mobile stations (MS) due to ESN exhaustion. In the Active Cell operating mode and IS-2000 system, the test set supports to test an MEID-equipped MS. The MEID related information either reported or retrieved during MS registration can be observed from the Mobile Reported Information screen. Also, you can establish a call between the test set and an MEID-equipped MS using the Public Long Code Mask (PLCM) determined by the specified PLCM Type .

MEID Support

The MEID Support setting is used to enable ( On ) or disable ( Off ) the test set to support of MEID and Enhanced PLCM tests for an MEID-equipped MS.

  • When the MEID Support is set to On ,
    • and an MEID-equipped MS is detected during registration ( MEID Supported indicates Yes), the test set sends the Status Request Message to retrieve the MEID value from the MS no matter what the Status Request Query setting is. Upon receiving the Status Response Message with MEID value, the test set displays the MEID result on the Mobile Reported Information screen (see MEID ). You can also retrieve the MEID value from the MS by pressing the F3 ( Query MEID ) or using CALL:MS:REPorted:MEIDentifier:QUERy command.
    • the test set can establish a call with an MEID-equipped MS using the Public Long Code Mask (PLCM) determined by the specified PLCM type. See PLCM Type for details.
    • the test set can not establish a call with an ESN-equipped MS.
  • When the MEID Support is set to Off ,
    • the test set does not send the Status Request Message to an MEID-equipped MS to retrieve its MEID value. Also, you can not retrieve the MEID value from the MS by pressing the F3 ( Query MEID ). The MEID-equipped MS only registers to the test set using pseudo-ESN which is derived from its MEID value. The pseudo-ESN reported from the MS is displayed on the Mobile Reported Information screen (see ESN ).
    • the test set can establish a call with an MEID-equipped MS using the Public Long Code Mask (PLCM) derived from the pseudo-ESN value.
  • You can not change the MEID Support setting when a call is established.

GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:MEIDentifier:SUPPort[:ENABle]

PLCM Type

The PLCM Type determines how an MEID-equipped MS generates its public long code mask (PLCM).

  • It is available only when the MEID Support is set to On .
  • It is sent to the MS via the PLCM_TYPE field in the MEID Extended Channel Assignment Message during a call establishment or in the MEID Universal Handoff Direction Message during an implicit handoff caused by the change of this setting.
    Public Long Code Mask Type
    PLCM Type Description PLCM_TYPE (binary)

    ESN Based

    PLCM derived from ESN

    0000

    BS Assigned

PLCM specified by the base station

    0001

    MEID Based

    PLCM derived from MEID

    0100

  • The test set can establish a call with an MEID-equipped MS using the Public Long Code Mask (PLCM) generated based on the specified PLCM Type . If ESN Based or BS Assigned is selected, a call can be established regardless of MEID value. If MEID Base d is selected, a call can be established only when the MEID value is successfully reported or retrieved ( MEID ).
  • While a call other than SO32+SCH or SO32+F-SCH is established, changing the PLCM Type setting results in an implicit handoff (see also Performing a Hard Handoff ). However, if the PLCM Typ e is changed from ESN Based or BS Assigned to MEID Based and the MEID value is empty due to a MEID query failure during registration, the call will be dropped. If the MEID results are empty due to cleared by pressing the F5 ( Clear MS & Capability Info ) on Call Control 2 of 3 or using CALL:MS:REPorted:CLEar command, the previously stored MEID value will be used and the handoff may succeed.
  • You can not change the PLCM Type while an SO32+SCH or SO32+F-SCH call is established.
  • If any of the measurements (Frame Error Rate, Waveform Quality + Code Domain, Handoff Waveform Quality and Code Channel Time/Phase Error) are running, changing the PLCM Type causes these measurements aborted and restarted.

GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:PLCMask:TYPE
