Performing a Registration

Last updated: June 20, 2006

Registration is the process by which the mobile station notifies the test set of its status, identification, slot cycle, and other characteristics so that the test set can efficiently page the mobile station when establishing a mobile station terminated call ( Establishing an Active Link with the Mobile Station ).

Registering a mobile station can be performed when the mobile station has found service with the test set's base station emulator in active cell operating mode. When a registration has completed, the Mobile Station Information window will display the registration data received from the mobile station. See Mobile Reported Information for a description of registration data received from the mobile station.

Registration Types

The test set supports the following types of registrations:

  • Zone-based registration, also referred to as "forced" registration by pressing F5 ( Send Register ) on Call Control 1 of 3 menu or sending CALL:REGister[:IMMediate] command.
  • Timer-based registration: the mobile station registers when a timer expires. The test set provides a setting for the time interval between registrations. See Setting Registration Parameters .
  • Power-up registration: The mobile station registers when it powers on. Mobile stations perform a power-up registration the first time service is found after being powered on.

Power-up registration can be disabled (see Setting Registration Parameters ) if the mobile station's IMSI is known and directly specified using Paging IMSI Setup . This provides a quicker way to page the mobile station without waiting for the mobile station first being registered.

Operation Considerations

Each time a new mobile station (determined by identifying a different ESN) registers with the test set, the test set will request the mobile station to report its band classes, the operating mode for each band class, and the max EIRP (if the operating mode is CDMA) for each band class. These results are referred to as Status Request Information. This is done during registrations only if the information had been previously cleared and status requests are enabled ( Paging IMSI Setup ). The Status Request Information results take a amount of time to be updated.

Each time a new mobile station (determined by identifying a different ESN) registers with the test set, some of mobile station capabilities results (such as FCH/DCCH Capability Information, F-SCH Capability Information, R-SCH Capability Information. see CALL:MS:REPorted:CAPability ) will not automatically reported to the test set until being queried by executing ( Call Control 2 of 3 -> F6 ( MS Capability Info ) -> F1 ( Query Mobile Capability Info ), or CALL:MS:REPorted:CAPability:QUERy ). The MS Capabilities Information results take a amount of time to be updated. These results are cleared if another new mobile determined by identifying a different ESN) registers with the test set or directly cleared by executing ( Call Control 2 of 3 -> F5 ( Clear MS & Capability Info )), or CALL:MS:REPorted:CLEar ).
