Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality Measurement Troubleshooting

Last updated: July 29, 2009

NOTE
The Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality measurement can not be concurrent with the Audio Analyzer instrument or the Real Time vocoder, nor can it be concurrent with the Swept Audio or the Multi-tone audio measurement. Hence starting the multi-tone audio measurement will turn off any other measurement that is active, and vice versa.

NOTE
All of the measurements except for the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality measurement become unavailable when the Voice SO Mode is set to PESQ.

Possible Setup Issues

During remote operation of this measurement, you should always set the Trigger Arm to Single. See SETup:PESQuality:CONTinuous . If single triggering is used during manual operation, press the START SINGLE key to trigger each measurement.

For accurate measurement results, always set all the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality measurement setup parameters to their proper settings for the measurement being made.

  • You should select a voice service option (SO1, SO3, SO17, SO68, SO70 or SO32768) (see Service Option ) and set the Voice SO Mode to PESQ (see Voice SO Mode ) to perform the PESQ measurement.
  • It is recommended that you perform the uplink or the downlink PESQ measurement separately if your mobile phone has not a good isolation between the audio in and audio out path. Performing the uplink and downlink PESQ measurement separately helps to ensure the measurement results to be more accurate.
  • The PESQ may cost more than 10 seconds to be completed. You should make sure the Measurement Timeout is set to a time long enough to complete the measurement, or you can simply turn this setting to Off to avoid a un-expected timeout.
  • During downlink PESQ measurement, if "Over Range" is displayed, it indicates that the measured audio signal at AUDIO IN port is far above the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage setting. You should increase the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage setting. If "Under Range" is displayed, it indicates that the measured audio signal at AUDIO IN port is far below the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage setting. You should decrease the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage setting. You can adjust the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage setting based on the value of PESQ downlink headroom value.

Other Techniques

Check to see if an integrity indicator other than 0 (normal) was returned with a measurement result (see Integrity Indicator ).
