Network Identity and Time Zone

Last updated: February 23, 2009

This section is only applicable to the lab application.

Network Identity and Time Zone Overview

The test set allows Network Identity and Time Zone (NITZ) information to be included in the MM and GMM Information messages sent to a UE, so that the UE can store and use this information. The NITZ information includes universal time (UT), daylight saving time (DST), and local time zone (LTZ).

There are several IEs in the GMM and MM Information messages that are used for NITZ. From these, only two are used for transferring time information; the `Universal time and local time zone' IE and the `Network Daylight Saving Time' IE.

See 3GPP TS 24.008 for more information on MM and GMM Information messages.

NITZ Parameters

You can configure the NITZ parameters in the test set to control the conditions under which the NITZ information is sent. The following parameters are available:

  • Send NITZ UT

This parameter forces the NITZ Information to be immediately sent to the UE depending on the call state. Valid call states for this action are Connected, PDP Active, or simultaneous Connected/PDP Active.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND[:IMMediate]

  • Set NITZ UT to UTC

Sets the NITZ Universal Time and Date to the Universal Coordinated Time and Date as found on the test set's System Configuration screen. This is available as a convenience for setting the NITZ time and date.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:UTIMe:UTC[:IMMediate]

  • NITZ Universal Time - Date

This parameter defines the Universal Time-Date for the NITZ feature. The format of entry is yyyy.mm.dd.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:UTIMe:DATE[:SELected]

  • NITZ Universal Time - Time

This parameter sets the Universal Time-Time for the Network Identity and Time Zone (NITZ) feature. The format of entry is hh,mm,ss using the 24-hour clock. This setting is included in the Universal Time and Local Time Zone Information Exchange.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:UTIMe:TIME[:SELected]

  • NITZ Local Time Zone

This parameter sets the Network Identity and Time Zone (NITZ) local time zone. The format of entry is hh,mm or -hh,-mm and the resolution is 15 minutes. Therefore, any entry that does not fall evenly on a 15 minute (quarter hour) boundary is rounded to the nearest 15 minutes.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:TZONe[:LOCal][:SELected]

  • NITZ Daylight Saving Time Include State

This parameter sets whether or not the Network Daylight Saving Time Information Element is included in the GMM or MM information message.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:DSTime[:HOURs]:STATe[:SELected]

  • NITZ Daylight Saving Time

This parameter sets the Daylight Saving Time value for the Network Identity and Time Zone (NITZ) feature. This setting is included in the Network Daylight Saving Time Information Exchange.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:DSTime[:HOURs]:VALue[:SELected]

  • NITZ Send on PS Registration

This parameter sets whether or not the NITZ information should be sent during a Packet Switched Registration. Packet Switched Registration includes the following procedures: GPRS Attach and Routing Area Update.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND:PS:REGistration[:STATe][:SELected]

  • NITZ Send on PS Call Origination

This parameter defines whether or not the NITZ information should be sent during a Packet Switched Call Origination.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND:PS:ORIGination[:STATe][:SELected]

  • NITZ Send on CS Registration

This parameter defines if the NITZ information should be sent during a Circuit Switched Registration (including the procedures: IMSI Attach and Location Area Update).

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND:CS:REGistration[:STATe][:SELected]

  • NITZ Send on CS Call Origination

This parameter defines if the NITZ information should be sent during a Circuit Switched Call Origination (including the procedures : Voice, CSD Sync, CSD Async, and SMS over CS).

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND:CS:ORiGination[:STATe][:SELected]

  • NITZ Send Immediate Domain Priority

This parameter defines which domain has priority during a NITZ Send Immediate in the case where the call state is both Connected and PDP Active simultaneously. That is, if a NITZ Send Immediate is performed when the call state is both Connected and PDP Active, this parameter determines if the NITZ Information is sent in an MM Info (CS) or GMM Info (PS) message.

    GPIB Command: CALL[:CELL]:NITZone:SEND:DOMain[:PRIority][:SELected]

Operating Considerations

The NITZ feature is only available in Active Cell operating mode.

NOTE
When the NITZ information is sent using MM and GMM Information messages, the `Universal time and local time zone' IE is always included. The `Network Daylight Saving Time' IE is only included when the NITZ Daylight Saving Time Include State parameter is set to ON.
