Measuring Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ)

This section is only applicable to the feature-licensed lab application or test application

There are three measurement modes for the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality measurement: Uplink Audio, Downlink Audio and Both (see How is a PESQ measurement made? for details).

The following procedure assumes that mobile station's antenna output is connected to the test set's front-panel RF IN/OUT connector.

A. Connect the mobile phone with the test set.

B. Establish a voice call with the mobile station.

  1. Follow the procedures as described in How Do I Set Up a Call and Make a Connection? to establish a voice call, with the following settings:
    • Set the Paging Service to AMR Voice
    • Go to Call Control 3 of 6 , press the Voice Call ( F5 ) Key and then AMR Setup ( F1 ), set the AMR Source to PESQ and the AMR Radio Access Bearer to the desired voice setting.

When a call is successfully set up, verify that Connected is displayed in the Active Cell window.

D. Make the measurement.

  1. Press the Measurement selection key.
  2. Turn the knob to highlight the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality measurement and press the knob.
  3. Press the F1 ( PESQ Setup ) to access the PESQ Setup menu.
  4. Set up the parameters for your test.
    • For the uplink PESQ measurement, set the Measurement Mode to Uplink Audio and set the Maximum Audio Out Peak Voltage to a proper value. See PESQ Setup example for the uplink PESQ measurement.
    • For the downlink PESQ measurement, set the Measurement Mode to Downlink Audio and set the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage to a proper value.
    • For measuring the downlink and uplink PESQ simultaneously, set the Measurement Mode to Both and set both the Expected Audio In Peak Voltage and Maximum Audio Out Peak Voltage to the proper values.
PESQ Setup example for the uplink PESQ measurement.
  5. Set the Trigger Arm to Single and the Measurement Timeout to Off.

    NOTE

If the Trigger Arm is set to Continuous, the measurement began executing as soon as you initialize the measurement. If single is selected in the Trigger Arm field, you need to press the START SINGLE to trigger each measurement.

A single PESQ measurement will likely cost more than 10 seconds to be completed. If you want to set a measurement timeout, make sure the Measurement Timeout is set to a value more than that time.

  6. Press the START SINGLE key to begin the measurement. A typical display of a PESQ uplink measurement is shown as below.
  7. If desired, turn the measurement off after finishing the measurements. Press the Measurement selection key, then select Close Measurement ( F4 ).
