Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Description

Last updated: January 16, 2009

This section is only applicable to the lab application.

How is an Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Made?

Out-of-synchronization handling of output power measures the UE's ability to monitor the downlink DPCCH quality and turn its transmitter on or off based on the quality level.

3GPP TS 34.121 5.4.4.2 states: "When the UE estimates the DPCCH quality over the last 160 ms period to be worse than a threshold Qout, the UE shall shut its transmitter off within 40 ms. The UE shall not turn its transmitter on again until the DPCCH quality exceeds an acceptable level Qin. When the UE estimates the DPCCH quality over the last 160 ms period to be better than a threshold Qin, the UE shall again turn its transmitter on within 40 ms."

"The UE shall not shut its transmitter off before point B. The UE shall shut its transmitter off before point C, which is Toff = 200 ms after point B. The UE shall not turn its transmitter on between points C and E. The UE shall turn its transmitter on before point F, which is Ton = 200 ms after point E."

The UE's transmitter is considered to be "off" if the transmitted power is below -55 dBm and "on" if the transmitted power is above -49 dBm.

3GPP TS 34.121 Figure 5.4.4.1 Test case for out-of-synch handling in the UE

The Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power measurement allows you to specify the time intervals and DPCCH_Ec/Ior levels between points A and F (see Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Parameters ). When the measurement is initiated, the test set varies its DPCCH level according to these settings. You must then measure the UE's power response using an external spectrum analyzer to determine if the UE turned its power off and on as required (see Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Results ).

Required Initial Conditions

Before performing the out-of-synch measurement, you must:

  • Connect the test set's rear panel TRIG OUT port to the TRIGGER IN port of an external spectrum analyzer (the external spectrum analyzer is required to measure the UE's output power and obtain measurement results, see Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Results ).
  • Connect the UE to the test set's RF IN/OUT port and to the spectrum analyzer's RF INPUT port via an RF splitter, and specify the loss due to the RF splitter in both the test set and the spectrum analyzer.
  • Set Trigger Output Setup to Measurement Generated .
  • Establish a Radio Bearer Test Mode connection (3GPP TS 34.121 5.4.4 specifies a 12.2k RMC connection). Note, this measurement is not supported on HSDPA or HSPA connections.

Recommended Initial Conditions

The following settings are recommended based on the 3GPP TS 34.121 5.4.4 requirements. Note that some of these parameters must be set before establishing a connection.

  • Set Connected DL Channel Levels as specified by 3GPP TS 34.121 Table E.3.3 and Table 5.4.4.3:
    • Cell 1 Connected CPICH Level = -10.00 dB .
    • Cell 1 Connected P-CCPCH/SCH Level = -12.00 dB .
    • Cell 1 Connected S-CCPCH Level = Off .
    • Cell 1 Connected PICH Level = -15.00 dB .
    • Cell 1 Connected DPCH Level = -16.60 dB . (This sets DPCCH_Ec/Ior before point A to -16.6 dB, because PO1 = PO2 = PO3 = 0, which makes DPCH_Ec/Ior = DPCCH_Ec/Ior).

    See Downlink Channel Levels .

  • Set (T313 + N313*10 ms) > (Ta-b + 200 ms + Tc-d + Td-e + N315*10 ms) to ensure that the UE will not drop the call when the measurement in initiated (see UE Timer and Constant Parameters and Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Parameters for more information on these settings). The UE may drop the call if the UE timers specify a drop time that is less than the time that the test set's DPCCH_Ec/Ior value is low, plus the time required for the UE to receive N315 "in sync" indicators. 3GPP TS 34.121 Table 5.4.4.2A specifies a value of 15 s for T313 and a value of 200 for N313.
  • Leave the Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Parameters set to their default values, (which correspond to 3GPP TS 34.121 section 5.4.4.2, 5.4.4.4.2 and Table 5.4.4.3):
    • Segment Ta-b Interval = 5.000 s
    • Segment Tc-d Interval = 5.000 s
    • Segment Td-e Interval = 5.000 s
    • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qa-b = -21.60
    • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qb-d = -28.40
    • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qd-e = -24.40
    • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qe+ = -17.60
  • Set UE Target Power to the maximum output power for your UE and set UL CL Power Control Mode to All Up bits .
  • Set Cell Power ( F7 on the Call Parms 1 of 3 menu) to -61 dBm .
  • Select Generator Info ( F3 on the Call Control 2 of 4 menu) and set AWGN Power ( F5 ) to -60 dBm.

No other measurements can be running when an out-of-synch handling of output power measurement is performed. If any measurements are running when an out-of-synch handling of output power measurement is initiated, they are closed and a message is displayed to indicate that they were closed. Likewise, if any other measurements are initiated while an out-of-synch handling of output power measurement is running, the out-of-synch handling of output power measurement is closed and a message is displayed.

FDD Test Mode Operating Considerations

The out-of-synch handling of output power measurement can be performed while in FDD Test Operating Mode , however you must configure the UE such that its output power will respond appropriately to the changes in the test set's DPCCH_Ec/Ior.

Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Parameters

See 3GPP TS 34.121 Figure 5.4.4.1 Test case for out-of-synch handling in the UE for a definition of points A - F.

  • Segment Ta-b Interval

Time between points A and B. The test set's DPCCH_Ec/Ior is set to DPCCH Quality Ratio Qa-b for the time Segment Ta-b Interval .

  • Segment Tc-d Interval

Time between points C and D. The test set's DPCCH_Ec/Ior is set to DPCCH Quality Ratio Qb-d for 200 ms plus Segment Tc-d Interval (because Tb-c = Toff = 200 ms).

  • Segment Td-e Interval

Time between points D and E. The test set's DPCCH_Ec/Ior is set to DPCCH Quality Ratio Qd-e for the time Segment Td-e Interval .

  • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qa-b

DPCCH_Ec/Ior between points A and B. (Note: the DPCCH quality ratio before point A is determined by the value that Cell 1 Connected DPCH Level is set to before the measurement is initiated, see Downlink Channel Levels .)

  • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qb-d

    DPCCH_Ec/Ior between points B and D.

  • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qd-e

    DPCCH_Ec/Ior between points D and E.

  • DPCCH Quality Ratio Qe+

    DPCCH_Ec/Ior after point E.

  • Measurement Timeout: see Measurement Timeouts .

Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Results

The Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power measurement does not return any measurement results at this time. Initiating the measurement only causes the test set to change its DPCCH_Ec/Ior as specified by the Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement Parameters . You must use an external spectrum analyzer to measure the UE's resulting output power. When the Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power measurement is initiated from the test set, the test set generates a trigger at point A that you can route to the test set's rear panel TRIG OUT connector using the Trigger Output Setup setting, to trigger the spectrum analyzer. See How Do I Make an Out-of-Synch Handling of Output Power Measurement? .
