Troubleshooting External Device Connection

Description

• When connecting two 8960s, it is recommended that you connect them via a hub (using the LAN 1 PORT and LAN 2 PORT on both 8960s), rather than through a gateway or WAN link, or connect them directly using a LAN crossover cable. This helps minimize the risk of lost data due to delayed packets.
• Before initiating an external device connection between two 8960s, you can verify that the two test sets are able to communicate by pinging one test set from the other. To do so, on 8960 #1:
  • Press the Call Setup key, then the left More key until the Ping menu is available.
  • Select Ping , then Ping Setup ( F1 ).
  • Set Device to Ping to Alternate ( CALL:DATA:PING:SETup:DEVice ).
  • Set the Alternate Ping Address to the IP address of 8960 #2 ( CALL:DATA:PING:SETup:ALTernate:IP:ADDRess ).
  • Select Start Ping ( F3 ) ( CALL:DATA:PING:STARt ).
• When you select Connect to External 8960 , if the External Device Conn Status moves from Not Connected through several other states ( Connecting/ Connected /Disconnecting ) and then immediately back to Not Connected , check both 8960s for an error condition. The 8960 to which you are attempting to connect may not have the hardware or license required for the External Device Connection feature, or may have incompatible firmware. (The underlying architecture of the External Device Connection feature has changed over time. The implementations are not compatible. To establish an External Device Connection between two test sets, the test sets must have compatible firmware (see www.keysight.com/find/8960upgrades for more information)).
• Ensure that Ext 8960 IP Addr on the 8960 originating the connection is equal to the LAN IP Address of the 8960 you wish to connect to (the LAN IP Address of each 8960 is shown in the LAN Connection Information window of the External Device Connection Setup screen as LAN (Self) IP Address , and also viewable/settable from the Instrument Setup ( F1 ) menu of the System Config screen).
• Ensure that Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are configured properly for each test set.
• Ext 8960 IP Addr and Connected Device IP Address will always be equal on the display of the test set that initiated the external device connection. However, Ext 8960 IP Addr and Connected Device IP Address can be different on the test set that was connected to, as Ext 8960 IP Addr is only used when initiating an external device connection.
• Ext 8960 IP Addr can not be set to the same value as LAN IP Address or DUT IP Address . If LAN IP Address is set to the value of Ext 8960 IP Addr , Ext 8960 IP Addr is reset to a blank field.
• The external device connection is not affected by a partial preset. However, the external device connection is disconnected as a result of a full preset.
