Test Set Security

Last Updated: August 29, 2007

This topic contains the following sections about the security of the test set:

Introduction

Microsoft recommends the following three steps to ensure the test set's Windows XP operating system is protected:

To check the status or make changes in the security settings for you test set, open the Windows Security Center. To open Windows Security Center, click Start, click Control Panel and  then double-click Security Center. The following image shows an example of the Windows Security Center window.

Windows Firewall

A firewall helps protect your test set by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to it through a network or the Internet. Windows checks to see if your test set is protected by a software firewall.

The test set is shipped with the Windows Firewall enabled for the External LAN, and disabled for the Internal LAN. To open Windows Firewall, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall. (The Windows Firewall can also be accessed in the Windows Security Center by clicking Windows Firewall under Manage security settings for: in the lower part of the window.) The following image shows an example of the Windows Firewall window.

Windows Firewall Exceptions for programs and ports have been added to the test set's configuration that allow proper operation of the test set over a network. You must not modify these existing settings because any changes you make may cause the test to stop operating correctly. You can add additional exceptions for programs and ports as required.

The test set has two separate Windows Firewall profiles:

Note that if you change the type of membership for either of these profiles, any changes you made to the Windows Firewall settings for that profile are lost and need to be made again.

Automatic Updates

With Automatic Updates, Windows can routinely check for the latest important updates for your computer and install them automatically. The test set is shipped from the factory with the Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them option selected. The test set must be connected to the internet for Automatic Updates to work. The following image shows an example of the Automatic Updates window.

It is recommended that the Windows Updates are performed when the test set is not in normal use. This is because downloading and installing Windows Updates can use significant resources in terms of your computer network and the test set's central processing unit (CPU). In addition, some Windows Updates may automatically restart the test set.

Virus Protection

There is no antivirus program included with your test set.  A number of antivirus programs have been tested and are compatible with the test set, see Installing Additional Programs on the Test Set for more details.

Spyware Protection

There is no antiSypware program included with your test set.
