Setting Mobile-Originated SMS Parameters
Last updated: February 28, 2011
This section is applicable to the lab application and to a test application with the required feature license.
You can control how the test set responds to a received SMS message and how the received message is displayed. These parameters are accessed from the Mobile-Originated SMS Parameter menu by pressing the
F5
(
Short Message Service
) on
Call Control 3 of 3
menu, then pressing the
F3
(
Mobile-Orig SMS Parameters
).
For detailed front panel operation, see
Set up the Mobile-Originated SMS parameters
.
SMS Support Control
SMS Support:
Used to specify how the test set responds to a received SMS message. See
CALL:SMService:MORiginated:PROTocol
. It is provided to support some of the CDG Stage 2
8.2 Mobile Station Originated SMS Tests
(see
Supporting CDG Stage 2 SMS Tests
),.
-
Enabled: indicates that the test set provides reception and confirmation to the MS.
-
Disabled: indicates that the reception is denied by the test set. It's useful for CDG Stage 2
8.2.6
tests.
-
Not Supported: indicates that SMS is not supported by the test set. It's useful for CDG Stage 2
8.2.7
tests.
-
Unknown Destination Address: indicates that the destination address is unknown to the test set. It's useful for CDG Stage 2
8.2.5
tests.
-
Network Failure: indicates that the reception is denied due to a network failure.
When the SMS Support is set to any value other than Enabled, the test set will still process the received SMS message (same as Enabled), but post an error message associated with the setting of SMS Support (see
SMS Support Settings
) when an SMS message is received. The test set will inform the mobile station regarding an unknown destination address, or that short message origination has been denied, or that SMS is not supported by the base station.

SMS Support Error Class
This setting determines what error class reported to the MS when a recieved SMS message (MO) is rejected due to the current value for SMS Receive Protocol is not Enabled. See
CALL:SMService:MORiginated:ECLass
.
Display Control
Row Index
: Used to control the scrolling of the received message displayed in the
Mobile-Originated Message
window.
Display Format (Message/Addresses)
: Specify whether ASCII or Hex format is used for displaying the received message contents in the
Mobile-Originated Message
window, as well as the call-back number (Call-Back Num) and the destination address (Dest Addr) in the
Mobile-Originated SMS Info
window.
-
If Auto is selected, the test set depends upon the message encoding of the received SMS message to determine the display mode of the
Mobile-Originated Message
window. If 7-bit ASCII, IA5, or GSM 7-bit default alphabet is shown in the
Msg Encoding
(see
Mobile-Originated SMS Info
), ASCII mode is used. Otherwise, the Hex mode is used.
-
If Auto is selected, the display format for the
Call-Back Num
and the
Dest Addr
(see
Mobile-Originated SMS Info
) is always ASCII.
SMS Call Drop Timer Control
The
SMS Call Drop Timer
setting (see
CALL:SMService:MORiginated:DROP:TIMer[:STATe]
) determines whether the test set will start the SMS call drop timer
-
If it is set to On, the test set will start the timer. The test set will disconnect the call in service option SO6 or SO14 when an SMS message is not received within a fixed amount of time (about 5 seconds) since the call was established or when an Release Order from the MS is not received within a fixed amount of time (about 5 seconds) since the SMS message was received. See
Test Set Behavior In Method 2
.
It's desirable to turn on the SMS Call Drop Timer if you expect the test set to post an error and end the connection to clear any hanging query (SMS Status, etc.) when the mobile station should have sent an SMS message or disconnected the call but failed due to defect in mobile or issue in the link
-
If it is set to Off, the test set does not set a timer. The test set will maintain the connection waiting for an SMS message to be received or the call to be disconnected.
It's useful to turn off the SMS Call Drop Timer when you are debugging or manually programming on the mobile station and do not want the test set to prematurely end the connection
The SMS Call Drop Timer is different from the call drop timer which is accessed from the
Call Drop Timer
(
F10
) on Call Parms
2 of 3
menu. The call drop timer indicates loss of reverse link. This timer also determines when the demodulation of the reverse link has been unsuccessful for a fixed period. See
CALL:CONNected:DROP:TIMer[:STATe]<[:SELected]|:TA2000>
.
