Setting Control Channel Parameters
Last updated: July 7, 2009
This section is only applicable to the lab application and to a test application with the required feature license.
Overview
When the test set is set to the protocol revision 7 (IS-2000-A) or above (see
Protocol Revisions
), either the pair of forward paging/reverse access (F-PCH/R-ACH) control channels or the set of the forward broadcast/forward common control/reverse enhanced access (F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH) control channels can be selected and used for the transmission of overhead and control information to or from the mobile station. This is different from the test set with protocol revisions 6 (IS-2000-0) or less which only supports the F-PCH/R-ACH control channels.
The test set with F-BCCH/F-CCCH channels configuration will send overhead messages on the primary F-BCCH (see
IS-2000 Primary Broadcast Control Channel Overhead Messages (P_REV > = 7)
) and the mobile station directed messages (such as General Page message, etc.) on the F-CCCH. See also
Settable Fields in Overhead Messages
.

Control Channel Configuration
The
Control Channel Configuration
(
CALL[:CELL]:PROTocol:CCHannel:CONFigure
) setting applies to protocol revision 7 (IS-2000-A) or above and is used to specify which forward common control channels are generated by the test set and which access channel is expected to be used by the mobile station. When the F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH is selected, the parameters relating to the F-BCCH/F-CCCH channels are displayed in the Control Channel Parameters menu. When the F-PCH/R-ACH is selected, the paging channel related parameters are shown. Also, this selection will toggle the
F3
softkey label to Access Parameters (see
Setting Access Parameters
) or Enhanced Access Parms (see
Setting Enhanced Access Parameters
) and update the Cell Information screen to display the current control channels information.
Changing this setting may be rejected and will revert to the previous value.
The F-PCH/R-ACH is the only pair of control channels available for protocol revision less than seven.
Control Channel Parameters (F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH)
When the
F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH
is selected, the following parameters relating to the F-BCCH/F-CCCH channels are displayed in the Control Channel Parameters menu:
-
F-BCCH Data Rate: specifies the data rate, convolutional encoding rate and also predetermines the F-BCCH slot size used for the F-BCCH. These parameters are included in the SR1_BRAT_NON_TD and SR1_CRAT_NON_TD fields in the Sync Channel Message (see
IS-2000 Sync Channel Messages (P_REV > = 6)
) sent to the mobile station. See also
Configuring the F-BCCH/F-CCCH Control Channels

The slot size is determined by the settings of data rate and code rate with one-one-one mapping.

F-CCCH Data Rate: specifies the data rate, frame size, convolutional code rate and also predetermines the slot size and the Walsh Code used for the F-CCCH. These parameters are sent to the mobile station via the FCCCH_RATE and FCCCH_CODE_RATE fields in the MC-RR Parameter Message (
MC-RR Parameters Message Settable Messages

F-QPCH State: Specifies whether or not to transmit the forward quick paging channel (QPCH). It's included in the QPCH_SUPPORTED field in the MC-RR Parameter Message (
MC-RR Parameters Message Settable Messages
) sent to the mobile station. See also
Configuring the Forward Quick Paging Channel (F-QPCH)
).
GPIB Command:
CALL:QPCHannel:STATe[:SELected]

F-QPCH Relative to Pilot Level: Specifies the QPCH level relative to the pilot level. It's included in the QPCH_POWER_LEVEL_PAGE field in the MC-RR Parameter Message (
MC-RR Parameters Message Settable Messages
) sent to the mobile station. See also

GPIB Command:

F-QPCH Data Rate: Specifies the QPCH data rate. It is converted to the QPCH indicator rate and then included in the QPCH_RATE in the MC-RR Parameter Message (
MC-RR Parameters Message Settable Messages
) sent to the mobile station. See also

Control Channel Parameters (F-PCH/R-ACH)
When the
F-PCH/R-ACH
is selected, the following paging channel parameters can be set from the Control Channel Parameters menu:
-
Paging Data Rate: Specifies the paging channel data rate. It is included in the PRAT field in the Sync Channel Message (see
Settable Fields in Overhead Messages
) sent to the mobile station. This setting applies to the F-PCH whenever it's available. See also
Configuring the Forward Paging Channel (F-Paging/Paging)

-
F-QPCH State, F-QPCH Relative to Pilot Level, and F-QPCH Data Rate: These settings are same as the corresponding settings on
Control Channel Parameters (F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH)
with the exception of the Extended System Parameter Message (
Extended System Parameters Message Settable Fields
) used. Moreover, the F-QPCH is not available for IS-95 system.
-
General Page Message Mode: Specifies the position of the General Page Message (GPM) in the Paging Slot. There are four frames (8 half-frames) in a paging slot and generally the General Page Message can be sent on any of the half-frames. When the GPM mode is set to
Variable
, the GPM is not fixed to any half frame but in a variable position which depends on the message load on the Paging Slot.
Note that if the GPM mode is set to a specific half-frame other than Variable, you must make sure there is no mobile station dedicated messages transferring on the paging channel (e.g. status query messages or SMS) in order to keep the GPM message in that half-frame.
GPIB Command:
CALL:PAGing:GPMessage:MODE
Operating Considerations
-
The change of
Control Channels Configuration
setting may affect the code level summation check (see
Other Settings That Affect Code Channel Levels and States
) since it may change the control channels generated and result in an invalid set due to the new control channels. If the change of
Control Channels Configuration
setting is rejected, the setting will revert to the previous value and an error "Control Channels Configuration setting rejected due to invalid code channel set with new control channels." will be posted.
-
The test set only supports one primary broadcast control channel (F-BCCH) when F-BCCH/F-CCCH/R-EACH is selected. In this case, the test set does not support broadcast SMS (
Delivery Modes Description
) since the IS-2000 standard specifies that the broadcast SMS can not be sent on the primary F-BCCH.
-
The test set supports transmitting point-to-point SMS message on the forward common control channel (F-CCCH) while it is generated in idle state. See
Delivery Modes Description
.
-
The test set only supports 1/2 code rate of F-BCCH and does not support 1/4 code rate F-BCCH as specified in the standard. See
F-BCCH Data Rate
-
The test set supports a subset of F-CCCH data rates, encoding types, and frame sizes that are defined in the standard. See
F-CCCH Data Rate
-
The test set supports F-BCCH overhead messages (see
IS-2000 Primary Broadcast Control Channel Overhead Messages (P_REV > = 7)
) required for the new release A (P_REV = 7) functionality. The F-CCCH supports the Mobile Station Directed Messages (such as General Page Message, Status Request Message, etc. that are carried on the Paging Channel for P_REV= 6) with some format changes as required for P_REV = 7. In addition, the test set uses the message defined in the earlier version of the standard if the message is sufficient for the operation (for example, continue to use existing General Page message instead of new Universal Page message).
-
The test set will page the mobile station either via F-CCCH or F-PCH in slotted mode unless the mobile station has registered as non-slotted. The test set will use the lesser value of a mobile station reported Slot Cycle Index (see
Mobile Reported Information
) and a settable Max Slot Cycle Index (see
Setting Cell Parameters
), for slotted mode paging.
